SJB Reach Vision

During the Covid-19 crisis, St John's Beaumont reacted quickly and introduced its own sophisticated online teaching programme 'SJB Reach' which has ensured continuity in excellent education as well as much needed pastoral care for all of our boys, near and far.

Below outlines our school’s vision for SJB Reach, based on the following important principles:

PRINCIPLES

  1. To provide the best possible academic and pastoral environment, led by live teacher interaction, in which to live and learn.
  2. To allow our boys to flourish in a new and unexpected environment that will equip them well for the future.
  3. To develop our boys’ independence in how they think and learn as well as how they chose to spend their time. These skills too will be in increasing demand in the future.
  4. To encourage boys to recognise and respond to the needs of others in their immediate and wider community.
  5. To ensure that the boys’ spiritual and pastoral wellbeing is prioritised.
  6. To encourage the boys to see learning outside of the classroom every bit as much as inside.
  7. To recognise that the breadth of opportunity at St John’s allows for a wider range of boys to thrive and consequently, it is essential that our online curriculum allows for this.

VISION

Our priority during this crisis, and for however long it lasts, is to support the boys both in their academic learning but also their spiritual and personal growth. We also recognise the new role that parents are playing in their sons’ growth and, together, we enjoy working with you to give your son, wherever you are in the world, the best possible experience to learn and grow.

The school wants to thank its teaching and administrative staff for the outstanding job they have done in helping to prepare SJBReach. The teachers have taken this unique opportunity to accompany the boys through a new and innovative way to learn. As it progresses, the curriculum continues to adapt and grow as we respond to new opportunities.

One of the most important things for a human being is our need to feel part of and contribute to something larger than ourselves: to draw strength from this and to contribute to its growth. Because of this, alongside the academic and wider curriculum, we are continuing to offer opportunities online for boys to reconnect with important elements of the School: the Chapel, our history, our values and achievements.

Morning Prayer and registration is continuing to be an integral part of the School day and Night Prayer on a Friday Evening is operating as normal from the School Chapel.

It is expected that boys are attend all online lessons in the same way as if they were at school and they prepare adequately for each day, ensuring that they are ready and logged-on to their device in good time before each lesson starts. This means that boys to wear their school uniform for each ‘school day', playing an important part in helping them to remain in a structured and focussed environment for each lesson.

The internet and other information and communication technologies such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets are powerful tools, which offer new and exciting opportunities for everyone for study and which undoubtedly have the power to promote creativity and enhance learning. It is however of equal importance that the boys do not spend excessive amounts of time each and every day looking at a screen: the curriculum has therefore been designed to provide adequate breaks and alternative learning opportunities away from a computer.

Lastly, this time is providing unprecedented opportunities for your sons to develop a greater sense of independence, irrespective of their age: an ability to develop their own thoughts or the older they become, their choices or ways of learning. We will challenge your sons to practise independence, realising that being independent involves freedom of thought, self-regulation, goal setting and reflection – it is not simply working alone.
