This time is given to boys from Year 3 upwards to invest in developing new skills and becoming comfortable in taking risks and accepting challenges. They are encouraged to move away from choosing things they find purely enjoyable and in which they excel in favour of trying different opportunities and developing new talents.
This time offers boys the opportunity to try a skill or an activity that might be new to them or something in which they don’t excel. They are encouraged to do something they ‘need’ to do rather than something they might ‘want’ to do. If they can develop the open-mindedness and courage to challenge themselves in an encouraging environment such as St John’s, we hope they will continue to do it more willingly in the future.
There are also opportunities to seek additional support from their teachers or practice for upcoming examinations or interviews or simply read a book – the choice is theirs. In doing this we are encouraging them to be more self-aware in the support they need as well as being more meta-cognitively aware of their learning needs and how these might be effectively addressed.
We believe Formation time plays a key role in developing our boys’ resilience and independence which is becoming increasingly important as the challenges and opportunities they face increase.
